Public Transport Victoria is in talks with Apple to add Myki cards to Apple Wallet to allow commuters too touch on and off with iPhone or Apple Watch.

PTV has recently completed a successful trial with Google Pay on mobiles with Android 5 or newer. From Thursday this week Android users will be able to add their Myki card to Google Pay to use on train, trams and buses in Melbourne and across Victoria.

As with the banks of Australia PTV has had trouble accepting Apple’s stringent control of Apple Pay including their fees. ANZ & Commonwealth Bank remain the only two of the major 4 banks to support Apple Pay.

Sydney users have beeb able to use Apple Pay on public transport for a while now. They pay direct by credit card rather than needing to add their Opal card to Apple Pay.

Adding Myki to digital wallets will make it easier for Melburnians to ditch their physical wallets and make Melbourne public transport more attractive to tourists who currently need to buy a $6 Myki card.
