Apple releases macOS Mojave

Apple’s macOS Mojave brings Dark Mode, new desktop Stacks, FaceTime  group calling, an updated Mac App Store and familiar iOS apps, including News, Stocks, Voice Memos and Home.

Ooh Dark Mode!

macOS Mojave includes Dark Mode which transforms their desktop to a darkened color scheme. With dark mode you not only get a darkened dock and menu bar but a dark desktop, built-in Mac apps like Mail, Messages, Maps, Calendar and Photos also include Dark Mode designs.

macOS Mojave also features a new Dynamic Desktop that automatically changes the desktop picture to match the time of day.

Updates to the Finder & Desktop

Have an out of control desktop? We have seen a few! Stacks for the desktop can automatically organise your desktops by stacking files into neat groups based on file type, date or tags.

Finder also now includes a new Gallery View that lets users skim through files visually including a files metadata and quick actions to perform on files.

iOS Apps Coming to the Mac – News, Stocks, Voice Memos and Home

The missing iOS apps finally make it to macOS with News, Stocks, Voice Memos and Home now coming to the Mac.

Group FaceTime

Group FaceTime allows you to talk to multiple people at the same time. Participants can be added at any time, join later if the conversation is still active and choose to join using video or audio from an iPhone, iPad or Mac or audio only from Apple Watch. You can even start a Group FaceTime from a group chat in Messages.

Group FaceTime was removed from the initial release of macOS Mojave but will be released in a subsequent update.

Apple updates the Mac App Store

The Mac App Store in Mojave includes anew look and rich editorial content. The new design includes a Discover tab, while tabs for Create, Work, Play and Develop help users find apps for a specific project or purpose.

Other Stuff

  • Improvements to Privacy and Security.
  • Screenshots deliver new on-screen controls for easy access to every screenshot option and new screen recording capabilities.
  • Continuity Camera allows Mac users to take a picture or scan a document nearby with their iPhone or iPad and have it appear instantly on their Mac.
  • Markup tools are now integrated into Finder, Quick Look and Screenshots, making it fast and efficient to add comments to content and share with others.
  • The iOS apps coming to Mac highlight a new feature to be released next year which will allow iOS apps to run on macOS.

Does Mojave support my Mac?

with macOS Mojave a number of older Macs are no longer supported. Mojave has the following requirements:

  • MacBook (Early 2015 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Mid 2012 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Late 2012 or newer)
  • iMac (Late 2012 or newer)
  • iMac Pro (2017)
  • Mac Pro (Late 2013, plus mid 2010 and mid 2012 models with recommended Metal-capable GPU)

How do I update to Mojave?

  • Make sure you have a backup!
  • Open the Mac App Store.
  • Click the Updates tab.
  • You can track the progress of your download on the Purchased tab of the Mac App Store.
  • After the download completes follow the prompts to complete the install.
