iOS 12.1 beta released for testing causes new rumours of upcoming iPad Pro

iOS 12 WWDC iPhone iPad

With iOS 12 now released Apple has released the first beta release of iOS 12.1 to developers for testing. It contains a few hints regarding an upcoming iPad Pro refresh.

Group FaceTime

Group FaceTime makes a return in the beta. It was removed from iOS 12 late in the testing phase after being announced at WWDC 2018 in June.

Group FaceTime Apple adds one of the first major updates to FaceTime in a few years. Calls can include up to 32 participants with a carousel along the bottom to show all participants.

It automatically highlighted those talking by bringing them to the front of the screen. Effects such as stickers and the newly announced Memoji can be applied in real time (on iOS only) during the call for a more fun experience.

Landscape Mode FaceTime

Review of the source code indicates that there will be possible to unlock devices in landscape mode with FaceID. This is likely for an upcoming iPad Pro refresh and is unlikely to be available for existing models as it would require hardware changes.

New iPad Pros may support 4K video output

By using the iOS Simulator included with xCode iOS 12.1 beta 1 appears to allow the output of 4K video but none of the current hardware supports it.

Current speculation is that this again points to upcoming iPad Pros at an October event.

The iPad Pro rumours are also supported by an iPad2018Fall reference found in the source code.
