After recent rumours of production and imminent release Apple has announced that it has cancelled the AirPower wireless charging matt.
Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering made the announcement in a statement to the press.
After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward.
Dan Riccio – Apple Senior Vice President
Apple revealed the device at the 2017 iPhone launch event and advised a launch in 2018. The year slipped by with no further mention of the device.
The AirPower matt included three charging coils which worked with software to locate the device on the pad in software and provided charging status of multiple devices on the iPhone display. It was promoted as a way to charge your iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods at once.
Recent rumours detailing production and images of the device appearing on the web and packaging suggested that the AirPower was expected imminently. It is unclear at what point Apple has cancelled the device; it may have encountered production issues that were the last straw for Apple.
