Netflix has removed AirPlay support from its iOS apps citing somewhat dubious “technical reasons” angering its users.
In a subsequent statement to the press Netflix has blamed Apple for the need to remove the AirPlay feature.
According to Netflix they are unable to detect which device Netflix is playing on and with Apple’s addition of AirPlay 2 to multiple TV sets they are unable to determine what the device is. It has been suggested that the feature removal is more about data harvesting from it’s users rather than any technical issue.
We want to make sure our members have a great Netflix experience on any device they use. With AirPlay support rolling out to third-party devices, there isn’t a way for us to distinguish between devices —what is an Apple TV versus what isn’t —or certify these experiences.
Therefore, we have decided to discontinue Netflix AirPlay support to ensure our standard of quality for viewing is being met. Members can continue to access Netflix on the built-in app across Apple TV and other devices.
Netflix launched support for AirPlay in 2013 and had maintained functionality until this week. Local playback on iOS devices and Apple TV is unaffected by the changes according to Netflix and the company provides a tvOS app in addition to apps for many TV manufacturers.
