Apple quietly discontinued their AirPort line in April but continued to sell remaining stock. It appears they have run out of stock.
All AirPort and TimeCapsule devices have now been removed from Apple stores. There had been no updates to the devices since 2013 and they had long been rumoured to be discontinued.

The original AirPort wireless networking device was released back in 1999 with speeds of 11 Mbit/s and, in our opinion, resembled a UFO.
The latest Airport Extreme models were released in 2003 and have not been updated since 2013. The Extreme models were one of the first wireless base stations to support 802.11n wireless speed.
The last update in 2013 upgraded them to 802.11ac to achieve speeds of 1.3 Gbit/s.
Apple launched the AirPort Express products in 2004 and last updated them in 2012.
The Time Capsule was essentially an AirPort Extreme with a built in hard drive which worked with Apple’s Time Machine backup solution. It was released in 2008 and last updated in 2013.
